In case you forgot,
It has ONLY been 150 years since African-American MEN were given the opportunity to weigh in and let their voices be heard in the political arena. Actually, while the 15th Amendment gave African-American men the right to vote 150 years ago, there were a lot of racist people in America that did everything in their power to block the African-American vote despite the 15th Amendment.
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.
The Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.
15th AMENDMENT TO THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION
It has ONLY been 100 years since WOMEN were given an opportunity to weigh in on who their local and national representatives would be. Prior to August 18, 1920 it was not believed that the woman’s voice had value.
“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”
19th Amendment to the united states constitution
The way I see it, as an African-American woman, I am not in a position to take anything for granted in this country and I definitely owe it to those that fought for me to have the basic right to vote, to go to the polls. More importantly, as a citizen of the United States of America I believe it is imperative that I participate in the selection of the individuals that are making decisions about the value attached to human lives. Don’t you?
Vote! Like your life depends on it! Because it does!
Much Love,
Tonza
