Thanksgiving in Charleston, SC: Tonza’s Travel Adventures

As we walked through the historic district in Charleston, South Carolina, admiring the beautiful homes, I could just imagine myself sitting on the front porch, sipping a mint julep. Spending Thanksgiving with the “Original Divas” was a blast. If you enjoy food, history, and beautiful homes, you need to add Charleston, South Carolina, to your list of places to visit.

Although we were in an Airbnb with a fully equipped kitchen, none of us had any intentions of cooking during our stay in South Carolina.  Thinking we would be the only people searching for a place to eat on Thanksgiving, we were surprised to learn that most of the restaurants were booked solid. Unlike us, others had gotten the memo that there were a lot of families that preferred dining out on Thanksgiving Day.  Fortunately, due to some cancelations, we were able to secure a reservation at Eli’s Table. The restaurant’s atmosphere and our festive mood made up for the limited Thanksgiving menu being offered.

While we would definitely like to return and experience Eli’s Table on a day other than Thanksgiving, two of our favorite restaurants were  Poogan’s Porch and Jestine’s Kitchen. These should undoubtedly be on your list of places to eat whenever you visit Charleston. You will not be disappointed.

Unfortunately, our poor planning meant we did not get to take the highly anticipated Gullah Tour. Fortunately, we did not let this spoil our trip. Instead, we had a great time exploring and taking in other parts of Charleston.

We decided to ride over and check out the beautiful campus of The Citadel one evening when we weren’t quite ready to return to our Airbnb.  Established in 1842, The Citadel is one of six United States senior military colleges. It wasn’t until 1995, over 150 years later, that women were allowed to receive the benefits of an education at this prestigious military institution.

We also had an opportunity to visit Emanuel A.M.E. Church. For those of you that don’t remember…On June 17, 2015, white supremacist Dylann Roof massacred nine African-American worshippers during Bible study at Emanuel A.M.E. Church.

Emanuel A.M.E. Church is one of the oldest African-American churches in our country with a rich history of politically and socially active members.

So as not to forget our history and to pay respect to our ancestors we spent several hours touring Boone Hall Plantation.

I am looking forward to returning to Charleston in the near future because there is quite a bit more exploring I would like to do. With this being our second successful “Traveling Thanksgiving”, we are looking forward to year three. We are already throwing around the idea of Martha’s Vineyard. Where do you think we should go?

Much love,

Tonza

Perfectly Imperfect but VERY PROUD WOMAN, MOM, LAWYER, and AUTHOR, but most importantly...LIFE LOVER! I laugh loud, I work hard, I play hard, I am adventurous, I am curious, I am driven, I have moments of deep insecurity, I am loving, I am vulnerable, I am explosive (not one of my finer qualities), I dance around my house alone, I am an awful perfectionist which makes my insecurity worse, I sing out loud in my car without any concern for whose watching, I have trust issues, I do not live through my children, I no longer try to force my children into the mold that I created so that I could feel validated as a mother, I am a risk-taker, I am guarded in my personal life, I am kind, I am grateful. I am so excited about the rest of my life!

  1. The short answer is, as long as you’re with family and enjoying quality time, any place will be great.
