Ava DuVernay’s Rules For Success

Ava Duvernay

I have been pouring into myself over the past couple of weeks and trying to consume anything and everything that is in alignment with what feels right to me. In short, I am seeking to be more true to who I am.

While I was curled up in my bed on Sunday, I was clicking through YouTube videos as part of my manifestation homework when I came across Ava DuVernay’s Top 10 Rules For Success. Ava DuVernay began her career as a filmmaker at 32 and hasn’t looked back since. And while her skill as a filmmaker has bought quite a few untold stories to the forefront of our minds, I deeply admire how intentional she is about making sure other women and people of color are given opportunities that they are often overlooked for. My personal favorites by Ava DuVernay right now are 13th, When They See Us, and of course, Queen Sugar!

I hope you find some time to watch the video but for those of you that can’t here are her top 10 rules:

  1. Don’t Ask For Permission
  2. Pay Attention To Your Intention
  3. Love What You Do
  4. Change Your Perspective
  5. Include Others In Your Dream
  6. Appreciate Others
  7. Take Action
  8. Put Others First
  9. Be Grateful
  10. Find Your Creative Process

Much Love,

Perfectly Imperfect but VERY PROUD WOMAN, MOM, LAWYER, and AUTHOR, but most importantly...LIFE LOVER! I laugh loud, I work hard, I play hard, I am adventurous, I am curious, I am driven, I have moments of deep insecurity, I am loving, I am vulnerable, I am explosive (not one of my finer qualities), I dance around my house alone, I am an awful perfectionist which makes my insecurity worse, I sing out loud in my car without any concern for whose watching, I have trust issues, I do not live through my children, I no longer try to force my children into the mold that I created so that I could feel validated as a mother, I am a risk-taker, I am guarded in my personal life, I am kind, I am grateful. I am so excited about the rest of my life!
