A Love Letter to Myself

Takiya Lewis

You have to remember who you are, what you want and what you deserve.  Sometimes what we want isn’t what God wants for us.  Walking away from it may be hard, it may even hurt, but you have to remember staying and settling for something is not the same as being blessed with something. How many examples can you think of where you let what you were settling for affect what you wanted and deserved?  It took me a while to realize that that’s what people mean when they say you are blocking your blessings.  As crazy as it sounds, not letting go of things that aren’t meant for you keeps you from receiving what is for you.  During those times, you have to take solace in the fact that while you may not have what you want, you will have exactly what you need.  In my experience, what you need is always better.

HOW MANY EXAMPLES CAN YOU THINK OF WHERE YOU LET WHAT YOU WERE SETTLING FOR AFFECT WHAT YOU WANTED AND DESERVED?

You cannot fall into the trap of trying to be who someone else wants you to be.  You cannot compromise your values to accommodate someone else.  If who you want doesn’t recognize who you are, you don’t need to have that person in your life.  Period.  You absolutely cannot have anyone in your life who causes you to second guess your gifts.  You cannot convince someone to love you the way you need to be loved.  For too long you’ve been too nervous or scared to say “I’m the prize”.  No longer.  You are the prize!  Not by the nature of what you have, but because you are who you are!  Your gifts won’t be wasted on the wrong person.  They won’t be taken for granted.  They’ll be acknowledged and appreciated.  You have to remember that you are amazing and there is no one like you and there will never be.  You don’t have to accept less than you deserve and hope that one day it will all work out.  You won’t be asking for too much from the right person.

FOR TOO LONG YOU’VE BEEN TOO NERVOUS OR SCARED TO SAY “I’M THE PRIZE”.

Don’t cry.  God knows what you need.  Find your peace, whatever that may look like.  What you need is on the way.

I’m a mom first. A lawyer by trade but a lover at heart. Lover of traveling, food and wine. Also a hopeless romantic who believes my soulmate is out there somewhere and will find me when the time is right. But until then, I’m going to live love laugh, while having mimosas at brunch!
